The Colonial Boys "The Bicentennial Song Collection" CD

The Colonial Boys was, in all likelihood, a group formed especially to put out a CD of Australian folk songs to capitalise upon the 1988 Australian Bicentenary of settlement. I cannot find out anything about either the group or this CD and CD papers do not advise of the musicians involved. Most of the arrangements were by a Stewart Peters, and there is a folksinger and instrumentalist from Sydney by that name, so I presume he is the lead singer (any further advice is very welcome).
By its very nature, it includes most of the most popular Australian traditional folksongs supplemented by On the Road to Gundagai, Paterson's The Man from Snowy River and Clancy of the Overflow and Eric Bogle's The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (attributed to Begal?? instead of Bogle). There are no moments of folk singing brilliance - just a good, solid and enjoyable performance

  3. I have quite a lot of Australian folk music and a lot of it features traditional Australian trades, including whaling, so I'll dig into my collection meanwhile.

  6. 'Twas a Frankie Land hit and also done by the Statler Brothers. The way to search for lyrics is:
Lyrics "her put in the song title or part of the lyrics in quotes"
    In this case the query
    Lyrics "The Kid's Last Fight"
will get lots of hits listing the full lyrics

  8. This album was indeed recorded by Stewart Peters for the Bicentennial in 1988. I was a mate of his brother Doug Peters back in the 80's-90's. Doug use to play around Sydney's Western Suburbs with the Brian Gillett Trio - regulars at venues like Mounties, Cabra Vale Diggers Club and various Liverpool hotels. Stewie would occasionally join them for a bit of fun. Stewart used to have a recording studio at home, where he wrote and recorded a lot of jingles etc for the advertising industry. He worked with the likes of Doug Parkinson and was mates with Phil and Tommy Emmanuel back in the day. I believe the Colonial Boys were mainly Stewart, with his brother playing some guitar work on the album and a drum machine to keep the beat. Doug gave me a signed cassette version of the album upon release - and we joked about his becoming a star on the back of it. Cheers, Steve. Aussiecossiedarwin@hotmail.com
